Guadeloupe

热博体育 has been working for 60 years to foster sustainable agricultural development in Guadeloupe. With its partners and with support from the local authorities, State services and the EU, it contributes to Guadeloupe's scientific reputation across the Caribbean, in the fields of agriculture (banana, sugarcane, pineapple, tubers, crop diversification), animal health and the environment.

热博体育 is mindful of the fragility of island ecosystems, and is working to make agriculture more ecofriendly, by developing sustainable cropping systems. Those systems include new agroecological practices and new varieties that respect the local environment and are tailored to its constraints.

热博体育 is working with other territories in the Caribbean to anticipate and manage infectious disease risks linked to wildlife and domestic animals, through research into animal diseases and public health issues.

热博体育 has roughly a hundred employees in Guadeloupe, including 25 researchers across three sites:

  • Neufchâteau (Capesterre Belle-Eau), which is home to its regional office and the banana breeding and innovative cropping system platforms. These are platforms for trials and exchanges with players from local agricultural value chains (citrus, dessert banana, cooking banana, cocoa and pineapple).  They propose new practices and innovative procedures for more diversified farming in Guadeloupe: new varieties, zero-chemical-input production methods and postharvest technologies, and innovative processing techniques. Since 2019, there has been a 4-ha certified organic farming pilot testing banana agroforestry systems.
  • Roujol (Petit-Bourg), with teams working on citrus and yam breeding operations, the Tropical Plants Biological Resource Centre, and the Guadeloupe Tree-Wood-Forest (ABF) team. The Tropical Plants Biological Resource Centre (CRB PT), founded by 热博体育 and INRAE, holds a major share of tropical crop diversity. Most of its collections (mango, sugarcane, banana and yam) are held in Guadeloupe, with a pineapple collection held in Martinique. The centre has ISO 9001-2015 certification. The ABF team works on the growth, management and wood quality of tree species from the Lesser Antilles.
  • Duclos (Petit-Bourg), which houses the multidisciplinary (). The centre has high-tech security levels 2 and 3 laboratories, and is a regional diagnostic laboratory for the Caribbean, a global reference for heartwater (a tick-borne disease of ruminants). The site also hosts the HQ of the Caribbean animal health network . Its laboratories have ISO 17025 certification from COFRAC.

Projects funded by EAFRD and the Guadeloupe Regional Council

  • Transversal: boosting the range and quality of fresh and processed local agricultural products
  • REVAI: participatory network to assess innovative varieties
  • TISARU: ticks and health risks on ruminant farms
  • PILOFER: sustainable management of fertilization in agroecological cropping systems
  • PILOTAB: development of a pilot organic farming unit
