A shared vision and roadmap to address the challenges of tomorrow

The French overseas regions, areas rich in biodiversity and culture, are facing major challenges such as climate change, ecological transition, sustainable management of natural resources and food sovereignty. 热博体育's 2024-2028 overseas roadmap forms part of the approach to co-create innovative, inclusive and sustainable solutions, and a tangible impact on the ground.

This overseas roadmap is the result of collaboration through a series of workshops and meetings led by 热博体育 with its partners in the field, as well as internal work involving all 热博体育 departments. An advisory committee bringing together local authorities, the State and the Office for the Development of the Overseas Agricultural Economy (ODEADOM), also helped draft the document. This Strategy, part of 热博体育's vision for 2018-2028, is based on the objectives defined in the 2024-2026 Objectives, Means and Performance Contract (COMP) signed between 热博体育 and its governing bodies.

Three priority research topics focusing on the needs of overseas populations

热博体育's overseas roadmap focuses on research for the needs of overseas regions: achieving sustainable development goals; resilience to global changes, including climate change; preservation of biodiversity; tackling health threats; food sovereignty; and more broadly the need for local economies that can guarantee the health, economic and energy security of their people.

In the roadmap, 热博体育 sets out three priority research themes up to 2028:

• Adaptation to climate change: In response to the challenges posed by climate change, 热博体育 will focus on adaptation strategies, including the sustainable management of tropical forests and natural environments, soil preservation and the circular economy. The aim is to develop resilient and sustainable agricultural practices, while preserving endemic biodiversity and local natural resources.
• Autonomy and food sovereignty: 热博体育 is committed to supporting sustainable agri-food systems, in particular by promoting local production. The emphasis will be on relocalizing supply and stimulating local production in order to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen the food sovereignty of overseas regions.
• Using the “One Health” approach for agroecological transition: 热博体育 will support agroecological transition, with particular emphasis on plant, animal and ecosystem health. Its objective is to develop pioneering solutions for more sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural systems, while simultaneously improving public health.

Five ambitions for the overseas regions

热博体育's overseas roadmap consists of five main goals:

1. Producing scientific knowledge for decision-makers: 热博体育 is committed to developing transfer research to respond to the needs of overseas populations, particularly in terms of food sovereignty, agroecological transition and climate change adaptation.
2. Strengthening and promoting partnerships: 热博体育 will strengthen local and international cooperation to support agricultural transitions in the French overseas regions, drawing on research and training partner networks.
3. Supporting overseas innovation systems: 热博体育 will continue to co-create knowledge and innovations with economic, research and development stakeholders, civil society and decision-makers.
4. Developing transfer tools to assist in decision-making: 热博体育 will expand the use of decision-making tools to strengthen public policy and support robust agricultural systems in the French overseas regions.
5. Promoting and leading scientific cooperation: 热博体育 will invest in technical infrastructure to harvest, process and promote local tropical produce, thus contributing to the food sovereignty of the overseas regions.
