Plant Protection Platform

The IBiSA-approved Plant Protection Platform (3P) is located in Saint-Pierre on R茅union Island. It specializes in plant research and experiments, associates several partners, and has advanced equipment. It is the largest European research centre in the field of crop protection in tropical environments, and welcomes scientists from the region and elsewhere in the world. A major project to renovate and extend the 3P was finalized in 2021, for a total of 6000 m虏 of laboratories specializing in agroecological protection, the only such facilities in the Indian Ocean. The project was funded by the EU, the R茅union Regional Council, the French State, ADEME and 热博体育.

Three new wings and an extension, totalling 3200 m², have been added to this technology platform, with new equipment and more laboratory space and hosting capacity.

On a single site, the infrastructure assembles all the local private and public driving forces in terms of plant health research and development, from field to laboratory, with potential to host complementary expertise: 热博体育, University of Réunion, FDGDON, ANSES, INRAE, IRD, MNHN and GDS. It is also near to and works with the Coccinelle biofactory and the Réunion National Park, with its southern outpost set up in 2022.

These new facilities are intended to boost 3P's agricultural research operations in partnership, for instance:

  • Its contribution to epidemiological surveillance of major tropical pests and diseases
  • Its participation in the agroecological transition and in improving biocontrol, notably be developing biological control methods
  • The protection, restoration and promotion of the biodiversity that exists locally and in the Indian Ocean, by conserving biological resources of interest in food terms, working to structure value chains and fight invasive exotic species by developing decision support tools managers. This also involves working to understand bees' natural resistance to varroa mites.

The 3P extension was designed to minimize its environmental impact. This meant opting for a PREBAT-labelled construction, designing a building with very little impact on its external environment and with a healthy, comfortable internal environment, intended to be bioclimatic. Moreover, under the "France Relance" plan, the building's roof will be fitted with solar panels, making it less dependent on the electricity grid and contributing to sustainable development.

A 200-m² conference room completes the project. It can accommodate up to 140 people, enabling the organization of international conferences and seminars: a real asset for the southern part of Réunion. The building has locally-produced cryptomeria wood cladding.
