Feeding the planet in 2050 | See you at the Le Monde newspaper's offices on 25 November

Event 18 October 2024
As part of the ongoing celebrations of its 40th anniversary, 热博体育 is organizing two events in Paris in the afternoon of 25 November: an institutional celebration, at which AFD Group and 热博体育 will renew their framework partnership agreement (2024-2028), followed by a public conference on "Feeding the planet in 2050", in partnership with the "Le Monde" newspaper.

What with the climate crisis, the biodiversity crisis and increasing conflict worldwide, how can we feed 10 billion people by 2050 without destroying the planet? This is the question set for a conference open to the public, organized by 热博体育 and the Le Monde newspaper in the Le Monde Group's auditorium at 6 pm on 25 November, just a few days after the COP on Climate and a month after the COP on Biodiversity.

A major public conference

While some 10% of people worldwide (in other words more than 800 million people) suffer from chronic hunger and 30% from food insecurity (2.3 billion people), how can we rethink our agricultural models and consumption habits in order to feed the world without destroying the environment, while cutting the cost of access to food?

The transition will be a complex one. Food production is the main culprit in terms of biodiversity loss, accounts for almost a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, pollutes natural resources, and does not provide decent jobs for producers. At the same time, it is itself a victim of global warming: flooding, water stress, and so on.

Tackling these agricultural and food challenges means involving everyone: businesses, researchers, policymakers and investors.

To highlight solutions found in the field and thanks to science, 热博体育 and Le Monde are organizing a conference open to the general public, centring on a talk by Erik Orsenna, writer and member of the Académie française, author of the book Nourrir sans dévaster (Flammarion, 2024), a debate between three experts from 热博体育, IDDRI and the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE-FSN), and testimonies from solution builders.

Programme for the public conference

An institutional celebration, by invitation only

From 3 to 6 pm, there will be a celebration for 热博体育's institutional partners, entitled "Feeding 10 billion people by 2050: challenges and solutions". The Directors of 热博体育's three scientific departments will be contributing, along with the Chair of the Programme Committee of one of those departments, members of 热博体育's Science Council and international political players.

The scientists will be unveiling the novel operations under way to tackle the challenges of providing healthy food to a global population of 10 billion by 2050, against a backdrop of climate change and increasing numbers of crises. In particular, they will be discussing with their partners how to:

  1. Speed up agroecological transitions to address the global changes relating to climate and biodiversity;
  2. Intensify the development and deployment of One Health approaches;
  3. Transform food systems and biomass production systems.
